Adults who work with or care for young people can learn how to recognize and respond to mental health and substance use challenges during an upcoming Youth Mental Health First Aid certification course.
The Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation, through Mental Health First Aid from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, will offer the eight-hour training Wednesday, Dec. 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Baldwin Health’s Education Room, 1613 N. McKenzie St. in Foley.
Youth Mental Health First Aid equips participants with practical skills to recognize, respond to and support young people experiencing mental health or substance use challenges. The course covers common youth mental health challenges, adolescent development and a five-step action plan for responding to both crisis and non-crisis situations.
Topics include anxiety and depression, substance use, psychosis, disruptive behavioral disorders including ADHD and eating disorders. The training emphasizes knowing what to look for and what to do next when supporting young people.
Registration is $130, with 25 spots available. Training materials and lunch are included.
Those unable to attend the upcoming training can sign up to receive updates when new dates become available. Private training also is available for groups of 20 or more by contacting the foundation.
