BAY MINETTE, Ala.— The Coach McDaniel Youth Football Camp will be held June 27-28 under the bright lights of Lyle Underwood Stadium. Varsity coaches and various high school and college players will offer instruction during the two-day camp at the new location.
"We are very excited about this year’s youth camp! For the first time, we are going to hold the kids camp at Lyle Underwood stadium,” said Coach Nathan McDaniel. “We have also typically held the camp from 1 to 3 p.m. and we are moving the times back so that it will be cooler and it will be a fun experience for the kids and parents to be on the game field under the lights.”
The camp will feature two sessions divided by age groups. The Youth Camp (Kindergarten to 4th grades) will take place 5 to 7 p.m. and the Middle School Camp (5th to 8th grades) will be 7 to 9 p.m.
In the Youth Camp athletes will be given instruction on the basic fundamentals of football (offense, defense and kicking). They will also be given opportunities to compete in multiple skill challenges and football drills.
“We will focus primarily on teamwork, sportsmanship and football fundamentals rather than position specific work with this particular age group,” McDaniel said. “We want to provide adequate instruction to all campers.”
The Middle School version will be more advanced training that will specialize on position-specific skills, he said. “Athletes will choose offensive and defensive positions. Throughout the duration of the camp, campers will be given instruction on that particular position, competing in individual, group and team settings.”
Registration will begin at 4:30 p.m. June 27 at the stadium. The fee is $10 which includes a camp T-shirt. Participants should come prepared with shorts and cleats or running shoes.
Coastal Kids from Coastal Church is one of the camp sponsors. Coastal Kids Pastor Derek Phillips will be at the camp both days for a quick devotion during the break.
“We have an awesome lineup for the kids this year and I believe that they will walk away from the camp having had a great time and learned a little football in the process. Go Tigers!"
