DAPHNE, Ala. — Lisa Kennedy’s wit and wisdom are coming soon to Hallmark stores across the country.
The stay-at-home mom was named one of 24 online winners in the greeting card giant’s “Birthday Her Way” competition. Kennedy learned recently that hers is one of 63 designs nationwide — compiled from three competitions — to be sold in stores beginning in June.
“I’m really excited, and it’s extra fun having it happen a second time,” said Kennedy, who was also a finalist in Hallmark’s “YourPets” contest two years ago.
Kennedy, who said the creative outlet is a nice diversion from the rigors of raising a two-and-a-half-year-old, said she has kept a craft on the side since college to relieve stress, and actually started scrapbooking as an escape from studying for the bar exam. She practiced law for five years in the Missouri Attorney General’s Office for five years before relocating to Daphne in 2008.
The cards, which will be available for purchase June 21 in stores where Hallmark products are sold, previously were only sold online and represent the top picks from the “Birthday His Way,” “Birthday Her Way” and “Birthday Your Way competitions held in late 2009 and early 2010. Winners, including Kennedy’s design, can currently be found at www.hallmarkcontests.com.
“We had a really difficult time selecting which winners would be sold in stores because we loved them all,” said Theresa Murphy, Hallmark associate product manager. “These winners are the cream of a really good crop. Shoppers will find a great mix of birthday cards in this collection. There should be something for everyone: from adorable pet photos to laugh-out-loud cartoon creations.”
Murphy said judges looked specifically for cards with complementary writing styles and design concepts that would appeal to broad audiences through humor and poignancy. Winners received $250 cash prizes for being selected as online winners and an additional $250 cash prizes for being named in-store winners.
Kennedy is the only winner from Alabama, and her design joins honorees from 25 other states and one Canadian province.
Kennedy said when she entered the first contest in 2008, winners were selected via online votes, but the most recent accolade was decided by online purchases.
“It’s just extra neat to think about people buying my card,” she said.
Hallmark greeting cards and other products are found in more than 41,000 retail outlets in the United States alone and online at www.Hallmark.com. The Kansas City, Mo.-based company serves 100 countries and its products are available in 30 languages.
