Woman stable after acid attack

BAY MINETTE — A Bay Minette female was listed in stable condition Tuesday after a boyfriend allegedly threw an acidic chemical on her dress from her chest to her knees during a domestic quarrel, according to Police Chief Michael Rowland.

Mario Dewayne Mendez, 33, was arrested Monday at his Powell Heights residence and charged with first-degree domestic violence.

Rowland said the two “broke up” late Friday or early Saturday, and the female went to another male’s house on Almyra Street.

Mendez came to the house about 4 a.m. Saturday and allegedly doused the woman with Liquid Fire, a chemical drain cleaner used to unclog drains and sewer pipes. Mendez also assaulted the male, who suffered minor injuries.

After the attack, all three fled the scene. The female ran to Hand Avenue and flagged a passer-by who took her to North Baldwin Infirmary.

When police arrived, she was transferred to the University of South Alabama Burn Center where she was listed in critical condition from third-degree burns from her chest to her knees, Rowland said.

“When officers got the call, everyone had left the scene,” Rowland said. “We located the male victim and he talked to police, but the female victim was not able to immediately talk to us.”
