FOLEY, Ala. — A resolution was approved Friday morning during a special called business meeting authorizing notice of a public hearing concerning the lease of city property to Wolf Bay Lodge Inc.
City Administrator Perry Wilbourne said the legendary eatery and Elberta landmark will be coming to what is generally referred to as the “Wilson Pecan” property on Baldwin County Road 20 East. The restaurant’s move to the site has been in the works for some 60 days, Wilbourne said.
Wilson Pecan & Candy Co. closed in 2003 after nearly 20 years in business. The city bought the 33 acres for $1.2 million and talk was afoot at the time about developing an events center at the site, which had two buildings on it.
Wolf Bay Lodge opened its doors more than 30 years ago in Elberta and became a community icon that drew diners from all over the area.
The Lodge was damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, but a fire in early December 2008 completely destroyed the restaurant. It took three fire departments and about 40 firefighters three hours to put out the fire.
The public hearing notice approved by the city council notes the city will make “certain improvements to, and then lease, an existing structure and certain real property” to Wolf Bay Lodge. The lease agreement is thought to be 15 years with options.
The resolution concerning Wolf Bay Lodge will be considered at a special called council meeting at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 31, 2009 at City Hall.
In other council action, approval was given for a one-time cash award of $300 gross to Foley city employees.
The council also moved the Jan. 18, 2010, council meeting to Jan. 19, 2010, because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
