Winter storm depletes blood supplies to ‘emergency’ levels

Posted

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—The LifeSouth Community Blood Centers’ bloodmobiles are taking to the streets to rally donations in the face of hardship.

For the past week, icy roads and snowy conditions have cancelled blood drives and impeded donors from making it into blood centers for regular donations across the Southeast.

“When we say ‘emergency’ we mean our hospitals are not stocked, and LifeSouth has little or none of specific blood products in our inventory. We need people to donate now,” said LifeSouth’s Galen Unold.

To meet mounting demand, bloodmobiles will be dispatched Friday to the following locations:

Mobile County Health Department at 251 N. Bayou St. in Mobile from 7 a.m.-2 p.m.

Premiere Cinema 14 in the Eastern Shore Centre in Spanish Fort from 4-8 p.m.

Hancock Bank-Malbis on Highway 181 in Daphne from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Anyone in good health who weighs at least 110 pounds and is 17 or older may donate. Sixteen-year-olds meeting the other requirements may also donate with parental permission, and all donors must present photo identification.

For more information, or to locate a LifeSouth donor center in Baldwin or Mobile counties, call toll free 1-888-795-2707 or visit www.lifesouth.org.
