FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Ruth Geraci and Juanie Noland will present a program for the Fairhope Unitarian Fellowship on Sunday, Dec. 22. Their topic will be “Winter Celebrations: Religious and Cultural.”
Christmas and Hanukkah are winter celebrations well known to most Americans; however, there are many others in this country and around the world. The speakers will present a few of these. The public is invited to attend.
Geraci and Noland are retired career educators. Geraci taught at the University of New Hampshire, Noland at Tuskegee University. Each also taught elementary school in her respective area. Both say that if there’s anything they like better than teaching, it’s learning. They’ve enjoyed researching the wide variety of winter holidays that occur around the world — some major and more recognized, some minor but interesting — for their indication of cultural differences.
Among the celebrations they will describe in this presentation are Bodhi Day, Choimus, Kwanzaa, Jul, Soyal, and “Noche de Rabanos.” Both value the range of winter celebrations they have discovered because it is evidence of diversity of belief within our common humanity.
The Unitarian Fellowship meets each Sunday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Children’s Fellowship meets at the same time. An adult discussion group meets at 10 a.m. The Fellowship is located at 1150 Fairhope Ave., across from the Fairhope Satellite Courthouse.
