BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The Bay Minette Recreation Center, complete with tunnels, games, skating rink and dance studio is the stuff of children’s dreams —and adults’ as well, for that matter.
Children’s laughter and squeals of excitement echo throughout the gymnasium-style building, as a woman appears from a corner of the enormous play place.
Kelly Johnson, Bay Minette recreation director, holds a summer program called Kelly’s Kids in addition to organizing and teaching sports leagues for adults and children.
“Grandma always said I’d play for a living, so that’s what I do,” she laughed. “I just have a blast at what I do.”
Johnson takes on dodge ball, softball, kickball and exercise classes. She also aids in registration for Baldwin County football and cheerleading teams.
She began training for her career many years ago, she said.
“Ever since I can remember, I’ve played outside,” she spoke while delving into her memory. “I’ve played softball since I was 6 or 7.”
“I played volleyball in middle and high school and I played intramurals at (the University of) South (Alabama); I love to play sports, it doesn’t matter what it is.”
But sports aren’t the only plus to Johnson’s job.
“I think anytime you can make a difference in a child’s life, it’s rewarding,” she said.
Johnson has held the recreation director position in Bay Minette for 23 years; she developed the summer program, Kelly’s Kids, so that children can stay active and entertained during summer months.
This year’s first session featured an Olympic theme where kids competed in swimming, skating and even a seed-spitting contest. The second session was themed Wrestle Mania and included arm, leg and thumb wrestling, plus hula hoop battles and (fun) noodle wrestling, she said.
Assistant Recreation Director Tasha Burt has seen Johnson interact with many children, she said.
“She’s really good with them and she tries to be fair,” Burt said. “She’s just a good person and she’s easy to work with.”
Bay Minette Mayor Jamie Tillery agreed. She said she’s thrilled to have someone so hardworking when it comes to play.
“Excitement is a daily happening when Kelly and her crew are in action for Bay Minette Recreation,” she said. “Children and adults experience many, many forms of healthy and entertaining activities planned by our outstanding director.”
“Kelly’s activities incorporate fabulous and fun programs that teach sporting skills and sportsmanship while she involves our adults in healthy exercise for the body and mind.”
“Our city is fortunate for Kelly’s expertise, planning, professionalism and fun.”
