What are a Brazilian comedian-turned-maid, a doctor and her surgeon husband, a sister who loves to clean and an unexpected lover all doing in the same house? They’re having a slightly surreal experience of community, comedy and love.
Theatre 98 will present the engaging modern play, “The Clean House,” by Sarah Ruhl and directed by Timothy Guy, at Theatre 98, 350 Morphy Ave. in downtown Fairhope. Oct. 15 through 18 and 21 through 25. Showtime is at 8 p.m. except Sunday performances start at 2:30 p.m.
“The Clean House,” at first glance, reflects its title: a pristine house occupied by a busy, professional couple. What was once realistic, however, quickly stretches into a realm of memory and surrealism, while maintaining its essential truth and plausibility, giving a glimpse of each character’s emotional life.
Guy is passionate about his work on “The Clean House.” Guy is inspired by the work, “I like the open interpretation of the script because it lets the actions draw from the life of the actors. The script doesn’t make sense until the characters put life into it.”
Guy helms the cast with a diverse group of talent including theatre veteran Becky Thornton and thespians making their Theatre 98 debut: Anne Bodet, Reb Bodet, Jillian Rosandich and Karen Rhea White.
The design and production team includes scenic design by Jonne Thornton, sound design by Jim Laugelli and production management by Chris Francendese.
Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for students. Tickets can be purchased online at Theatre98.org, at the box office or by phone at 251-928-4366.
