Have a phone number that starts with 334?

It’s time to start dialing all 10 digits.

Mandatory 10-digit dialing in the 334 area code region begins Jan. 23, following a permissive period that allowed callers to get used to including the area code on local calls.

The change comes ahead of a new 483 area code overlay, set to launch Feb. 23. The overlay will cover the same region as 334 and ensure enough phone numbers are available as demand grows. Numbering resources in 334 are expected to run out by the third quarter of 2026.

Existing 334 customers will keep their numbers and service will not be affected. New customers or those adding a line may be assigned a 483 area code once the overlay is active.

The Alabama Public Service Commission approved the 483 overlay on March 6, 2024. While the 334 area code does not cover our immediate area, it serves the neighboring communities in Selma, Montgomery, Prattville, Pike Road, Tuskegee, Auburn, Opelika, Phenix City, Eufaula, Dothan, Enterprise, Troy, Greenville and a large portion of central and southeast Alabama.

Three-digit numbers, including 911, will not change. Only local dialing patterns will require the full 10 digits.
