Over the past years, our school has been supporting a program called Soliloquy Reading Assistant, or SRA.
This program provides a one-to-one, guided oral reading program that helps students improve their reading fluency and vocabulary. Teachers think it is wonderful for students who may need more practice in reading.
All of our classes participated in an orientation to using Soliloquy this month. Mrs. Kathy Smith and Mrs. Kathleen Carraway met with each class to demonstrate how to use this reading program. Students learned how to wear the microphone and do a microphone check. They also did a ‘cold’ read on “The Little Mouse.”
At the end of the school year, they will read this story again to measure their progress in reading.
Mrs. Linda Kay Loper’s fourth-grade students have become artists in masterpiece sentences this year.
Each day they are given a prompt with a subject and a predicate. They are very creative with their finished masterpiece product and have also created beautiful illustrations to complement their sentences.
Well done, kids!
Students from Mrs. Jennifer Curenton’s fifth-grade science class made sedimentary rocks while studying a unit on the rock cycle.
Students in Mrs. Erin Payne’s fifth-grade class have been focusing on finding the good things in our classmates.
They have discussed how much better it feels to have someone tell us a kind thing than to only tell us when something is wrong.
They have participated by “catching” each other doing something good and leaving a small note on the person’s desk to let them know they caught them. This has led to a lot of unexpected nice behaviors in class and they are all learning to find good in each other.
Congratulations to Emma Kirby and Brewer Ayres in Mrs. Michelle Henderson’s fifth-grade class for reaching the 10-point club.
Thanks to all of Henderson’s class that have joined the PTO. We only need five more parents for 100 percent membership.
We have also been working on snapshot Sentences. Students described pictures cut from magazines using each type of sentence: declarative, interrogative, exclamatory and imperative.
