DAPHNE — My name is Harper Cassady. I am in Mrs. Payne’s fifth-grade class. I will be helping to report our school news.

My little brother’s name is Walt. My cat’s name is Crookshanks (after the Crookshanks in “Harry Potter”) and the family dog is named Sopchoppy (after the Sopchoppy River).

My dad’s name is Max and my mom’s is Topie. Both of my parents are lawyers. My hobbies are reading, climbing and computer.

The Citizenship Club election for officers is coming up, as early as the end of next week. Leah Green and Max Bennett — both fifth-graders — are vying for the spot of president. There will also be elections for vice president and secretary-treasurer.

In Mrs. Battle fifth-grade classroom, students are teaching science lessons to their peers.

She put us in teams, and that team will teach part of a unit on natural resources.

First, we study the information out of book. We can look on the Internet for more information. Then we will be prepared to teach our lesson. This has been a fun experience and very exciting for the students!

Students have been leaving anonymous suggestions in a box located in our break room.

One student wanted to know why we don’t have more snack choices. Our reporters were able to find some answers.

We are limited in the type of snacks we can buy as we must meet nutritional guidelines set by the Baldwin County Board of Education. In addition, there are some things children would like to purchase but are too expensive for the school to offer.

Mrs. Paige Michael, our office clerk and canteen manager, recently said, “If there is a snack that many students want and it fits in our nutritional guidelines, I will look into bringing it to our snack room as a purchase choice.”

We look forward to our PTO open house scheduled for Monday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m.

We will start out in the gym where the students are going to be able to see our new bleachers and they look great!

There will be time to visit the classrooms too.

There will be schoolwide writing time scheduled for Oct. 18.

Fourth-grade students will be working on their expository skills while fifth-graders will work on their descriptive skills.
