Friday, Mrs. Payne, Mrs. Henderson and Mrs. Herring and their classes went to Pensacola to tour the Naval Air and Space Museum, to ride the Simulator and to see an IMAX show. They also ate lunch while there.
Mrs. Battle, Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Curenton and their classes are excited about going to the University of South Alabama for a field trip.
They will be participating in PAWS — Powerful Activities With Students. These are activities from across the curriculum that will challenge the students to think ‘out of the box.’
They will also be touring the Engineering Department, where they will get a first-hand view of the dune buggies the college students design for a college competition.
Next Monday, Project Jubilee students will visit the Mobile Museum of Art to see the M.C. Escher exhibit. Students have just begun to learn about his art.
Escher, who was born in Holland, took many years to gain recognition for his work. Even though his work demonstrates many math concepts, it is amazing that Escher did not like math when he was in school.
W.J. Carroll Intermediate School’s P.E. department participated in a fundraiser to help fund a new playground.
All students had to do was bring home an address booklet, get their parents to fill it out with 10 addresses, and return it to school.
School Mall is the company that runs the program; when they receive the booklets, they mail magazine subscription flyers and online ordering flyers to all addresses provided by our school.
For every order, a predetermined percentage comes back to our school. Students can also receive a Garfield T-shirt if they receive at least two orders from the addresses they supplied.
Students received prizes for returning their completed booklets. Teachers also received prizes for their students returning their booklets.
At the end of the week, we had a drawing for a remote-controlled robot; Chad Chambless from Mrs. Henderson’s class won it. Mrs. Henderson’s class was the class with the most returned booklets. Her class 21 returned booklets.
The whole school made a great effort in this fundraiser; we turned in 979 addresses.
Help our school get a new playground by making an order, if you receive something in the mail. A magazine order would make a great birthday, Christmas or even a classroom gift.
Mrs. Alexander, our librarian, put our pictures in the computer so we can see our smiles when we check out.
Also, there have been six parents coming in to volunteer for the big library project. Because the school name has changed (from Daphne Elementary South) we must re-label every item in the library (over 12,000!) to reflect the new school ID.
We welcome volunteers at any time, all year. Whether you can spare a few hours each week or only a few minutes, we need you!
If you can assist, please call the school office at 626-0277 or just drop by the library.
