DAPHNE, Ala.—Thank you to our parent volunteers for the fifth-grade Project Jubilee field trip to Dauphin  Island. They were a great help in keeping our students safe while having a great trip. Thank you to Mr. John Quinnelly, Mrs. Cindy Rose, and Mrs. Ann Scarbrough.

Once again, a big special thanks to three wonderful volunteers. Mr. Jay Parke, Mr. Ronny Champion, and Mr. Ken Basque have graciously donated their time and expertise towards getting our LCD projectors mounted on our ceilings. Over the space of three afternoons, they have mounted nine LCDs to classroom ceilings. With LCDs mounted, it makes using the classroom Promethean Boards even easier. Mr. Parke has two children at our school: Annabelle and Christian. Mr. Champion has a son, Dylan, here. Mr. Basque is one of our bus drivers.

We are still recruiting parents who could continue to help install additional LCD mounts. We are in the process of ordering one for every classroom. No technology experience is necessary. Basically, volunteers would need to be able to attach the hardware for the mounts onto the LCDs and run wires above ceiling tiles.

The school is working to get an installation demonstration set up so further volunteers would know exactly what to do. The goal is to get enough volunteers to do two to four classrooms. If you are interested or would like to know more, please leave your name and number with the school office. Mrs. Blair Heald will call you back.

Daphne City Hall will be the setting for SEEDS’ 2008 Mamma Mia Cook-off. The popular fall fundraiser celebrating Daphne’s Italian heritage is set for Saturday, Nov. 8, from 7 to 10 p.m., and will take place under the stars on the grounds of Olde Towne’s newest landmark.

Guests will sample dozens of creative entries as well as fine wine and authentic Italian desserts. State Rep. Randy Davis and the Jubilee Orchestra will provide musical entertainment and a large-screen television will be available for college football fans.

Proceeds from the event help fund SEEDS’ Classroom Enrichment Grant

Program, which has distributed more than $83,000 to the five Daphne public schools and Christ the King Catholic School since 2005. Advance tickets are $25 per person and may be purchased at http://www.seedsindaphne.org/ or at Daphne City Hall, Daphne Recreation Department, Will Hughes Catering and Market, Baldwin County Orthodontic Specialists, the Neighborhood School, the Frame Corner or at any participating Daphne school. Tickets at the gate will be $30 per person.

Ms. Mandy Ames’ fourth-grade class is learning about singular possessive nouns in grammar. These are some examples: “dog house” would change to “dog’s house,” “cat food” would change to “cat’s food,” and “rabbit home” would change to “rabbit’s home.” It is very fun to learn about singular possessive nouns!

In Ms. Kelly Agee’s fourth-grade class, the students are learning about motion. Motion is when something is moving and when something is not moving there is no motion. For example, when a car is going faster than other cars it has motion, but when a car is stopped at a red light it does not have motion.

Our Red Ribbon Week celebration is coming up Oct. 27–31. According to the Web site www.imdrugfree.com, Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug-free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America.

And, perhaps more importantly, Red Ribbon Week commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe.
