Our next PTO meeting is Feb. 10. Make plans to be there as Mrs. Jennings will be working with her P.E. classes to get ready for routines or dances during the meeting.
In sixth-grade social studies, students are studying about the World II.
Students recently had a discussion about the dictators who were coming to power at that time. Adolf Hitler took over Germany was an Austrian-born German politician who ruled Germany from 1933 to 1945. Benito Mussolini was an Italian politician who became the prime minister in 1922. Mussolini remained in power until he was replaced in 1943. Joseph Stalin was the general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union’s Central Committee from 1922 until 1953.
Mrs. Jennifer Newton’s, Mrs. Benita Battle’s, and Ms. Stephanie Carroll’s sixth-grade classes are learning all about fossils, rocks, and the rock cycle in science class.
Along with these studies have come many special projects. The students observed and classified types of rocks, and calculated their hardness based on the Moh’s scale. The students can bring in a real or home-made fossil, or a picture of a real one by Monday for extra credit.
We recently held our school spelling bee. Representatives from each fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade classroom met in the media center for the competition to see who would represent the school at the county spelling bee Feb. 3. Fifth-grader Peyton Galich was the school winner. Sixth-grader Kaleigh Akers was the second runner-up and fifth-grader Sydney Sain was the third runner-up.
Other classroom representatives were Makayla Giangrosso, Madison DuRant, Renata Rivera, Melanie Lim, Jacob Gay, Reed Jackson, Savannah Byrd, Tucker Clark, Shaniece Rowe, Allen Yazdi, Jenna Drake, Allison Watson and Christy Thacker.
Plans for the new playground are shaping up. Fundraising is ongoing. One way you can help is to participate in “A Night at the Gym.” It will be a night of fun games and activities.
The cost will be $10 and dinner will be served. The time is from 5:30 until 8 p.m. All proceeds will go toward the purchase of our new playground equipment.
Space is limited to the first 50 students who sign up. Each grade will get their own night: fourth grade is Feb. 6, fifth grade is Feb. 20 and sixth grade is March 13. More information and the sign-up form will be coming home the week of the event.
