The PTA would like to remind everyone of the PTA Executive Board Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be in the school cafeteria.
The Building Leadership Team would like to recognize the following volunteer tutors who willingly give of their time and efforts. Thank you Ms. Shari Crutchfield, Mr. Mac and Ms. “D.” You all are very much appreciated at Daphne!
Kindergartners in Mrs. Hawes’ and Mrs. McGinty’s classes visited Mercy Medical this week. Before arriving, students decorated their Native American headdresses and necklaces. They also wore the Native American shirts they designed. While there, students sang Thanksgiving Day songs, as well as patriotic songs to entertain the residents.
Mrs. Csakvary’s first-graders celebrated Thanksgiving by having centers where the children did arts and crafts projects in the ways Native American and pilgrim children may have. They did berry painting and made southwest-style Native American jewelry. Everyone had a great time!
First-graders in Mrs. Riel’s class are studying about Thanksgiving. They are finishing their unit on weather. Students are continuing to study addition facts and learning fact families. They are excited about getting new bookcases in our library. Students are organizing our books by author, topics, favorite characters, etc. Mrs. Riel’s class hopes everyone has a safe and fun Thanksgiving!!
Mrs. Vereen’s first-graders have been studying about what life was like during the 1600s. Students have learned that both Native American and pilgrim children played with dolls made from cornhusks. The children made their own cornhusk dolls.
Second-graders in Mrs. Stembridge’s class enjoyed their wonderful Thanksgiving feast! Thank you to all of the parents that helped. Designing footprint cornucopias was lots of fun. In December, the class will be having their second annual International Feast where the students will bring in food that represents their ancestors’ culture and dress in culture-appropriate attire.
Mrs. Utsey’s class wants to thank our parents for a wonderful Thanksgiving Feast! It was delicious! Thank you to all parents who sent in food or helped serve and clean up.
Everyone had fun learning about Indians in social studies. Students made teepees out of tortillas and drew Indian symbols to tell a picture story.
Mrs. Blackmon’s third-graders have been collecting items to send to soldiers in Iraq. They practiced their letter-writing skills and included a personal letter to a soldier. The students are excited about bringing some joy to others during the holidays.
In Mrs. Dickson’s third-grade class students are finishing their unit on Indians. Students will be presenting their Indian projects on Nov. 30. The students have lots of cool Indian artwork and pottery displayed in the hall and in their room. Be sure to check it out!
Third-graders in Mrs. Peturis’ class have been learning about different Native American tribes. Students did sand painting like the Navajo Tribe of the southwest did in their healing ceremonies. Students listened to a Native American storytelling and wrote their own stories about how something came to be. Students’ story titles include, “How the Giraffe Got its Long Neck,” and “How the Rattlesnake Got its Rattle.”
Mrs. Majure, our music teacher, would like to thank the Home Depot in Daphne for donating their aprons for our students. This will help keep those artistic “spills” off our school clothes. Thank you!
Mrs. Nolfe’s third-grade Project Jubilee classes have been working hard on completing their Australia unit. Last week students completed Koala origami and Aboriginal clap sticks. The students also worked on their own tessellations inspired by Dutch artist M.C. Escher. When the students return from the Thanksgiving holidays, they will be working on optical illusions.
