DAPHNE, Ala. — Note: This year two of Daphne Elementary School’s reporters are Angel Moore and Wes Riley. Each student wrote a little information about themselves.

Wes Riley is a third grader in Lisa Blackmon’s class.  His favorite subject is math.  His hobbies include football and playing pool.  His parents are Julie Riley and Fred Riley.

Angel is also in the third grade in Mrs. Peturis’ class. Her favorite subject is math. Her hobbies are riding horses and cheerleading. Her parents’ names are Leilani and Billy Moore.  Both students are looking forward to writing our weekly news article!

The students at Daphne Elementary held a very special flag ceremony Sept. 11.  Students raised a flag given to us by the soldiers stationed at Camp Striker, Iraq. The school honored those men and all Americans by celebrating our liberty at the flag ceremony. A kindergarten and first-grade class sang a patriotic song. An honored second- and third-grade student read their own works about liberty. There is also a “Justice for All” hall in the auditorium, where all students’ patriotic work was on display.

Summer reading participants celebrated this past Monday with special activities. Students who participated in the summer reading program and met their reading goals were sent a special invitation. Students were given a special play time on the playground with a jumper and popsicles.

Mrs. Clayton’s class would like to thank their grandparents for coming to their Grandparents Day Celebration. Everyone had a blast! The class is beginning a science AMSTI unit on Animals Two by Two. (AMSTI stands for the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative.) Students will compare two similar animals and learn about their characteristics and habitats.

Mrs. Riel’s first-grade class has been learning routines and procedures for school. In reading the students have learned short “a” and short “i” as well as endings “ck” and “x.” They are practicing building stamina, which means how many minutes they can read independently, all on their own.  The students are up to 15 minutes.

In math they are finishing chapter one on patterns and number recognition. In science they are finishing up a unit on the human body.  This week the class is getting ready for the flag raising ceremony on Thursday to remember all the men and women who fight for America.

Mrs. Davis’ class has been learning about space and is working on a space project. The class has a student teacher. Her name is Amanda Ramshur and she will be with us until October. They are also getting ready for PTA Open House.  The class has celebrated July/August birthdays: Jordan Higginbotham, Connor Burns, Mary Crigler and Noah Johnson!

Mrs. Stembridge’s class has learned many interesting things about exploration. They have discussed exploration in space, nature and in their neighborhoods.  In honor of Labor Day, students wrote letters to their first-grade and kindergarten teachers. The students thanked them for all of their hard work in preparing for the second grade.

Mrs. Nolfe’s third-grade Project Jubilee class is packing for a journey.  They’re traveling back in time about 2,500 years to Athens, Greece where they will learn about the culture, the language, customs and the many, many contributions the Greeks have made to modern times.
