The Bayside Fall Festival was a big hit. Everyone enjoyed all the student performances — the singing, the dancing, the piano playing, and performances by our fantastic band. Bayside parents worked extra hard creating booths and baking lots of treats. The kids had fun and the dunking booth was a BIG hit — although many of the staff dunkees were nursing colds the next week!
Our first-, second- and third-grade teachers and students continued their Native American studies by viewing their Native American villages and hearing the presentations about them. Each fourth-grade student got to wear a Native American outfit all day.
The day was celebrated by eating popcorn and drinking apple juice at lunch and the students were able to have fun outside in the afternoon.
The students learned that Native American Indians have been in Alabama for over 10,000 years, and the four major tribes — Creek, Chickasaw, Cherokee and Choctaw — are still here today.
The fourth-graders have decided that the book they read in conjunction with their Native American studies — “The Sign of the Beaver” — was a great novel about Native American ways. The story is set in Maine with the Penobscot Indians.
The Upper School Scholars' Bowl Team performed very well at the recent tournament held at T.R. Miller High School in Brewton. The players were as follows: Brooke Hohman, Michael Latady, Hannah Ng, Stew Shoemaker, John Clark, Emily Grant and Ryland Hunter.
Congratulations scholars.
Fifth- and sixth-grade math students are excited about beginning their Accelerated Math program. The Accelerated Math program helps students who need remediation, as well as, helping advanced students move on to more difficult concepts. The students compete to master as many “objectives” per quarter as they can.
Bayside had several qualified sophomores apply for the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference. Bayside Academy’s nomination for the HOBY will be Sidney Jackson, and the school’s alternate will be Sara Katherine Street. Congratulations Sidney and Sarah Katherine.
That’s all the news from the bluff for now. Keep your eye on this column for more Bayside happenings!
