After a wonderful Thanksgiving break, the Bayside students are ready to set sail into their last few weeks before Christmas break and exams!
The upper school’s National Honor Society will be selling poinsettias this week, to raise money for the club. They are being sold for $10.
One of Bayside’s seniors, Dorothy Griffith, has been selected as Bayside’s DAR Good Citizen. Congratulations on your hard work!
The juniors are breaking in their hiking boots in preparation for their annual trip to Pine Mountain, Ky. They will learn knitting, basket weaving, and other crafts. They will also be taking hiking trips and having snowball fights. This six-day trip will come to an end at Bayside’s Christmas Together, where the juniors will sing “Amazing Grace,” and an unknown song to display their newfound unity.
The eighth-grade Reading/ Writing Workshop students are rounding out their semester by writing short stories containing a lesson learned by the main character. They are also reading their semester favorite, “Alabama Moon” by Watt Key.
In eighth-grade Physical Science, they are learning about simple machine labs, like levers and pulleys.
Seventh-grade English students are finishing their semester with a unit on drama; students are enjoying the class participation in reading “A Christmas Carol,” a play written by Irael Horovitz, adapted from Charles Dickens’ novel.
In Life Science, they are making DNA models.
The middle-school students are excelling in sports.
The boys middle-school basketball teams are both undefeated. To join the middle-school’s success, the Bayside varsity basketball team has just won two big games against Gulf Shores and Fairhope.
Besides preparing for exams, the middle-school students are shopping for dresses and suits for their Christmas dance. It is being held at Bayside from 7 to 10 p.m. in the SAC.
The third-graders celebrated their leave for Thanksgiving break with a “Spanish Fine Dining Day.”
The students were given a recipe — a Spanish or Mexican appetizer — and a choice between a main course or dessert. They had to prepare the dish at home, translate the main ingredients, and also do some research on their meal.
Some of the famous dishes we had were paella, tamale pie, arroz al horno. flan, tarta de Santiago, orange cake, ropa vieja, torrijas and arroz con leche.
They had two days of delicious food and were able to learn new Spanish words! The kids presented their findings to the whole class, and the majority also made posters.
These last few weeks will go by fast; Christmas break will be here before you know it, and the first semester will be DONE!
Study, and keep up the hard work! Happy Holidays from the Admirals!7
