Author and Panama City, Fla. native Timothy A. Weeks will read and sign his new children’s book, Ol’ Middler Saves the Day, Satuday, June 23, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at Page Palette, 32 S. Section St. in Fairhope.
Nominated for the 2007 SIBA Children’s Book Award, this poignant release has prompted bookstore owners and educators to call it “the first great children’s book on Katrina.”
The book involves the character, Ol’ Middler, from Week’s popular first book, The Wise Mullet of Cook Bayou. Ol’ Middler gets caught in a harrowing adventure traveling Florida’s waterways to rescue his long lost mullet buddy, Goldie.
He survives a hurricane, and finally is able to rescue his heartbroken friend who has lost his mullet sweetheart, Silver, in the storm.
Following a suspenseful escape from flooded New Orleans, Goldie is inspired by the resiliency of the Gulf Coast and decides: “If people could rebuild then surely a mullet could, too.”
The book has a message of survival taught to children through the lovable Ol’ Middler and the resilient Goldie.
“Hurricanes have been traumatic for the Gulf Coast over the last couple of years,” says Weeks. “In my tale I sought to render the tragedy and heroism in a manner that children could fathom.”
