Weekly locally grown produce market opens

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — New Fairhope resident Vicki Lager was one of many who turned out downtown May 21 to shop for fresh vegetables and other specialties.

Lager selected produce with the help of Daniel and David Eckman of Eckman Farm in Elberta. The father and son were vendors at the first Fairhope Outdoor Market of the season.

The event, which is sponsored by the city, will be held every Thursday, from 4 until 6 p.m., through July 9.

The event initially took place exclusively on Church Street, just north of Fairhope Avenue, but will expand beginning May 28.

Because of the positive first-week response the market received from the community and local vendors alike, it will now also encompass the block of Church Street between Fairhope Avenue and De La Mare Avenue.

The market makes available fresh and organic vegetables and fruit, fresh-cut flowers, local honey, bee pollen, a large variety of plants, baked goods, homemade soap and candles, and other products from local farmers and vendors.

The market also features local artwork from Artists by the Bay, and offers face painting for children.

The Haven will be at the market each week as well, holding pet adoptions.
