DAPHNE, Ala. — Around 200 residents socialized, listened to music and consumed wine and beer at an Olde Towne Daphne alcohol store.
Vino e Birra, an alcohol store on the corner of Main Street and Daphne Avenue, hosted a wine and beer festival in its parking lot Saturday.
One of the store’s three owners, George McKee, said the number of people that came to the event surpassed his expectations.
“A lot of people came in and bought tickets off the street that day, which kind of surprised me,” McKee said. “I got 216 wine glasses for the event, and all were used except a few.”
Tickets cost $25, with some of the profits going to Smile Train, a non-profit organization that helps pay for surgeries of kids with cleft lip and palate.
Each surgery can cost as low at $250, according to the organization’s website.
The event netted around $5,000 before expenses, but organizers said they don’t yet know how much of that amount will go toward Smile Train.
Roman Street, a local band, played for the event’s attendees. There were around 35 wines and 10 beers at the event; Daphne restaurant Cousin Vinny’s served as the food vendor.
“We’re having a lot of fun,” Laura Thompson, Roman Street guitar player Noah Thompson’s wife, said.
“It’s been fantastic,” Jim Whitney said. “The band is great, the food is great, and the wine is great.” Whitney said he and his wife bought the first two tickets available.
Some people attended the event from outside the Jubilee City.
“We were visiting family, and they were planning on coming, so we tagged along,” said Greg Marana, of North Carolina. “It’s been nice.”
Vino e Birra opened in May, and the store hopes to raise money for a charitable cause as well as giving people a fun event in the heart of the Jubilee City.
Mckee said that there is talk of doing another event similar to this one at the beginning of next year, possibly sometime in the spring.
