Warriors come back to beat BCHS Tigers

MOBILE, Alabama - The Tigers appeared to have all but the details set for a return ride to the Michell Center to meet Murphy in the 6A boys South Regional championship game Friday.

But a 55-43 Baldwin County High lead to start the fourth quarter would not be enough as the Davidson Warriors turned a 13-6 fourth-quarter rally into a 66-63 semifinal win. The Tigers closed the 2011-12 record book at 21-13.

BCHS led by as much as 16 points in the third quarter, but the fourth was another ball game. The Warriors took advantage of three Tiger turnovers and converted on seven-consecutive opening transitions to cut the lead to 59-57 with 1:39 left in regulation. Marcus Johnson made a pair of double-bonus free throws and Larry Rogers hit a short

jumper to keep the lead at four points, 63-59, as the clock hit the minute mark.

But a five-second turnover on a Tiger inbound, a 4-0 run by Davidson and an unusual take on the continuation rule gave the Warriors the lead 64-63 with 36.6 seconds to go. Andre Cox's 3-point attempt with 14 seconds left nearly fell to tie the score, but rimmed out.

Xavier Dortch led the Tigers and the floor with a game high 22 points hitting three of his six 3-pointers in the third quarter to help balloon the lead for Baldwin County. Apollo Daily and Rodgers closed with 12 points each for BCHS. Rogers fell on his hip during the game and appeared to be in pain and limited in leaping by the fourth quarter but battled until the end. Rogers led the Tigers in rebounds

with eight.

Phillip Rankin led the Warriors with 15 points, LaKeith Watkins added 12 points and Toni Wright had 11 for DHS. Wright dominated the boards as the only player with double-digit grabs with 17.

Davidson edged the Tigers in first-half rebounds 19-18 and 38-30 for the game.

Davidson(14-11) and Murphy (25-5) tip off for the fourth time this year. The Warriors take a 2-1 series lead into Friday. The boys 6A South Regional championship game is set for at 3:15 p.m.
