Stanley M. Walker, 95, born Feb. 23, 1914 in Xenia, Ohio, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009 in Foley.
He was the son of Marcus Henry Walker and Beatrice McKay Walker.
A resident of west/central Illinois for many years, he was a graduate of Colchester High School and Western Illinois University, receiving his master’s degree from the University of Illinois.
He married Dorothy Kern on May 13, 1942 in Terre Haute, Ill. A veteran, he served in the National Guard and was a field artillery officer during World War II.
His career in education spanned 42 years. He began as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, taught and coached briefly at Terre Haute High School (Illinois) prior to World War II and returned to Media High School (Illinois) as a teacher and eventually, the school principal.
He entered county school administration, serving as Assistant County Superintendent, County Superintendent and Regional Superintendent for Warren/Henderson Counties, before retiring in 1979.
The Walkers retired to Foley where he was active in the Foley Rotary Club, the First Presbyterian Church and Curmudgeon Coffee Group.
He was devoted to his faith, to his family and to his community. He was committed to his students and found great satisfaction in their later successes. He was a lifelong learner, an avid reader and an enthusiastic traveler. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a patient demeanor and a generous heart.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Kern Walker; son, Don Walker of Fairhope; daughter Jan (Scott) Schmitz, Odessa, Fla.; and two grandsons, Andy (Sabrina) Schmitz, Odessa, Fla., and Tanner (Amanda) Schmitz, Land O' Lakes, Fla.
Graveside services will be held at 19 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17 at Pine Rest Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at The First Presbyterian Church of Foley.
