Volunteers offer time to help upgrade Foley Elementary playground

FOLEY, Ala. - Take down some of the older Foley Elementary School playground equipment? Check.

Dig up some debris, rocks and other potentially harmful objects in the playground area? Check.

Erect the new, state-of-the-art equipment as the centerpiece of the playground? On the horizon.

Volunteers offered their help Saturday at FES and will continue helping on future Saturday "Work Days" until the project is complete, Susie King, physical education teacher at the school, said. The helping group was able to remove some potentially dangerous debris and make the playground area more attractive and well kept by raking up leaves and removing trash, but the new playground slide and other equipment being installed is the unfinished business.

"I guess we'll have to do some more," she said.

The Baldwin County School Board will save $2,500 because of the work done by the volunteers, Zana Price, city activist and school patron, said.

The volunteers arrived and began working at around 8 a.m. and did not stop until noon. There were plans to begin the project July 16, but inclement weather halted their efforts another week.

"Last week, it rained us out," King said.

More volunteers are needed to help on future Saturdays until the project is complete. To get more information about what time and which Saturdays the group will meet to work, call the school at 251-943-8861.
