GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Vigor Wolves stopped the Dolphins on four downs in overtime and escaped Gulf Shores with a 24-16 win in 5A Region 1 play.

Jacoby Glenn picked off Gulf Shores (0-4, 0-3) quarterback Brandon Silvers in the end zone on fourth down, putting an end to the Dolphins' hopes of upsetting the No. 8 Wolves.

"That was a good football game right there," Gulf Shores coach Mark Freeman said. "We've coached in a lot of big games and our kids, tonight, when we look back one day, this is going to be a step for our program. We played several ninth graders tonight, and a lot of tenth graders, and the kids just played with heart. That's all we asked them to do. Last week we didn't play well, but tonight I think we played as good as we can play against a real good football team."

Deangelo Miller carried five yards for Vigor's go-ahead score in overtime, then Alabama commitment Marvin Shinn grabbed a pass in the end zone for the two-point conversion to put the Wolves up 24-16.

Gulf Shores battled from a 16-6 deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game. Brandon Silvers hit Ryan Hadley in the end zone for a 5-yard score to pull the Dolphins within three points with just over six minutes left in regulation. Vigor drove deep into Gulf Shores territory on its next possession, but Josh Carroll stopped the drive with an interception at the Dolphin 15. Gulf Shores drove to the Vigor 15 and Nick Anagnastoplous made a 32-yard field goal with nine seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Freeman credited his defense, which forced three turnovers and sacked Vigor three times, with keeping his team in the game. Dylan Searcy had two sacks and a fumble recovery, Drew Tranchina had a sack, a fumble recovery and recovered a muffed punt, and Brandon Davis had a fumble recovery.

"Our defense has been a play or two away all year," Freeman said. "We've always been where we were supposed to be and we keep talking about 'just keep working, be where you have to be.' Tonight was a good night for us defensively.

"I don't believe in moral victories. It is a loss and we are still 0-4, But when we look back this is going to be a stepping stone for this program."

The Dolphins host Saraland on Friday, while Vigor (3-1, 2-0) plays Murphy at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
