Video series offers interesting look at our nation

If you are planning your family vacation or contemplating a “staycation,” the Bay Minette Public Library is here to help. We have a wonderful series of DVDs from Sentimental Productions that showcases some of the vast beauty our nation has to offer whether it is travelling to a beach destination, a national park or a historic locale.

Sentimental Productions, based out of Cincinnati, Ohio, began creating quality videos in 1988 featuring America’s unique music, culture and heritage. They began with an hour long television presentation “The Unsinkable Delta Queen” about Cincinnati’s Delta Queen Riverboat to highlight the city’s river heritage for its bicentennial celebration. With its popularity and success the company decided to branch out and apply this same approach to other distinct regional locations throughout the country.

The Bay Minette Public Library has both the Sentimental Sing-Along collection and the Sentimental Serenity series. The sing-along selections feature several volumes including “Songs from the Heartland,” “Songs from the Home Front” and “Cowboy and Campfire Songs.” This DVD collection features performances of memorable songs that mark important eras in American history, songs that have been handed down from generation to generation. There is even a volume entitled “Songs of Patriotic Pride” which showcases the anthems that helped forge the American spirit.

The second part of this quietly wonderful DVD collection is Sentimental Serenity which takes the viewer on a journey through the United States. Broken down by region, this growing collection features the Gulf Coast, Southeast, Great Plains, Mountain West, the Pacific Northwest and New England. The series features beautiful scenery from the different areas of the country and focuses on the land’s natural beauty. Those that offer insight into what the Gulf Coast and Southeastern states have to offer focus on Tennessee’s Cumberland Gap, the Florida Keys, the Louisiana Swampland, Mississippi Gulf Coast and, a little closer to home, Mobile Bay.

The Bay Minette Public Library has all seven Sentimental Journey DVDs. Each DVD journey is divided into six segments covering different noteworthy natural attractions of a region. For example, the Gulf Coast journey features Mobile Bay, Louisiana’s Honey Island Swamp, the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Ochlockonee River which runs from Georgia into Florida, Galveston Island and Mustang Island both located in Texas.

Each selection features “video portraits of nature’s wonders.” This beautiful scenery can either be accompanied solely by relaxing music or by brief commentary on each locale. You might even glimpse a place that you didn’t even know you wanted to visit! So check them out to find your vacation destination or just to expand your appreciation of the natural wonder our nation has waiting for you, from sea to shining sea.
