FAIRHOPE, Ala. – Selena Vaughn was presented with the Wayne de la Rua Award at the Baldwin County Master Gardeners Annual Awards Luncheon held at Jubilee Shores United Methodist Church in Fairhope. The entire membership of the Baldwin County Master Gardeners votes for the winner -- a member who exemplifies the spirit of the organization.
This honor acknowledges the extraordinary contribution Ms. Vaughn has made to the growth and continued success of the Baldwin County Master Gardeners Annual Spring Plant Sale held at the Weeks Bay Reserve, April 13, 14 and 15. Every week from August through the end of April, she is working on some aspect of the Spring Plant Sale. Many of these volunteer hours include getting her hands dirty in the Daphne High School Greenhouse where plants are grown specifically for the sale.
“It’s hard to separate the greenhouse and growing the plants from the plant sale itself,” reports Vaughn. “And, to help assure that we offer the widest range of locally grown plants that will thrive in our climate, I’m also in direct contact with most of the local nurseries.”
Vaughn has been a Master Gardener for six years. She is also on the Daphne Beautification Committee where she has been a member since 2006. Currently, she is chair of the Village Point Foundation that serves as stewards for the VIllage Point Park Preserve in Daphne.
The Baldwin County Master Gardener Program is an educational outreach program provided and administered by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. The Baldwin County Master Gardeners are engaged in programs ranging from annual native plant sales, to community outreach programs, to educational opportunities for gardeners of all ages.
