FAIRHOPE — The University of South Alabama Health Center has officially opened its new surgery center at the Mapp Family Campus in Fairhope, providing Baldwin County residents access to advanced medical care.
Located at 21950 Alabama 181, the 24,000-square-foot facility was made possible through a land donation from Louis and Melinda Mapp, long-time supporters of USA Health. The couple has actively volunteered at the University hospital and Children's and Women's Hospital.
The new surgery center includes six operating rooms and two additional spaces for procedures. Equipped with advanced technology, USA Health surgeons will offer specialized services in pediatrics, orthopedics, urology, general surgery, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, podiatry and ear, nose and throat, among other medical disciplines.
Owen Bailey, CEO of USA Health and senior associate vice president for medical affairs, expressed his excitement about the center's opening, emphasizing its convenience for the residents of Baldwin County.
"This center will improve access to care in a convenient location close to home," Bailey said.
He noted that the establishment of this facility has been in the works for some time.
USA Health is the region's only academic health system that combines clinical care, research and education. The Mapp Family Campus, where the surgery center is situated, is not just about medical care but also focuses on overall wellness, education and nutrition. Visitors can experience various amenities, including walking paths, an outdoor educational and gathering area, and an amphitheater.
The center's grand opening on Aug. 1 was attended by more than 100 people who gathered inside the surgery prepping room, which will soon serve future patients before their procedures. Before the ceremony commenced, Kim Crawford-Meeks, the chaplain and manager of the spiritual department at USA Health, led a prayer for blessings and the success of the center.
University of South Alabama's President, Jo Bonner, emphasized that their goal is not just to be the biggest health care provider in the nation but to offer the best care possible to families in need.
