DAPHNE, Ala.—The Daphne City Council during the council meeting Monday night unanimously voted to encourage the Alabama Legislature to designate U.S. Highway 98 from U.S. Highway 31 in Spanish Fort to the Barnwell curve as “Via Bellator,” which means Warrior Way, .
Dr. Barry Booth addressed the council to request the designation to honor all those who have served in the United States military.
“I think that to bring this to your attention tonight is certainly appropriate in that it is D-Day. Sixty-seven years passed and we have had many of the World War II veterans on the Honor Flight who were at Omaha and Utah Beach during D-Day and prior to D-Day,” Booth said. He was referring to the annual trip WWII veterans can take to the Washington war memorials. “The men and women of World War II gave us the opportunity to make the choices that we do today and pass it along to our children and grandchildren. It is a debt we are unable to repay.”
Spanish Fort has already endorsed the resolution and Fairhope is expected to vote on the designation next week.
Councilman August Palumbo said that the designation would not only be for veterans.
“It is not necessarily specifically for the servicemen that currently serve but this is to honor everyone who has worn the military uniform of the United States. It is for warriors, past, present and future. This is an all-encompassing designation,” Palumbo said.
“It also gives credit to the families of these veterans because they gift their young men and women to us for a certain amount of time …. It will be a daily reminder to the families and those veterans that have spent time serving our nation and wearing the cloth. I believe it is a very honorable gesture,” Booth said.
