BAY MINETTE, Alabama — United Way of Baldwin County presented a sponsorship to the Kappa League to help defray the costs of transportation, development programs and college tours. The Kappa League works to build leadership skills through its mentoring program and provides participants with many opportunities to serve the community.
“We are proud to sponsor the Kappa League and their work in mentoring young men in our community,” said Marina Simpson, executive director. “We believe in creating lasting change for citizens in Baldwin County and the DKL’s efforts to mentor young men and provide them opportunities to become strong citizens matches up perfectly with our mission.”
The Kappa League program formed last year and included ninth through 11th grade students from Baldwin County, Daphne and Spanish Fort high schools. This year the group plans to expand to additional schools.
The league is sponsored by the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and is part of its National Guide Right program. The fraternity also collaborates with the Baldwin County Board of Education through the office of Drop Out and Prevention.
Advisor Abdoul K. Sanogo said they simply want to offer Kappa League members the opportunities to expand their horizons and open doors of possibilities.
“We want to teach them to invest in themselves,” Sanogo said. “We want to expose them to different things that they have not been exposed to, to be a part of the community that they serve, to be an active participant in the community and not just a by-stander.”
