United Bank to offer trust and estate planning services

United Bank’s President and CEO Robert R. Jones III announced today that United Bank has partnered with The Trust Company of Sterne Agee to offer trust and estate planning services. Available through United Bank’s Financial Services Division, the partnership gives bank customers greater access to enhanced investment and planning services for individuals, families, businesses, foundations and endowments.

“All of us have personal experiences with situations that have benefitted or would have benefitted from trust and estate planning,” Jones said. “The experience, depth, range and capability of the team at Sterne Agee are extraordinary and give me great confidence in offering such services through this partnership.”

United’s partnership with Sterne Agee is a result of an extensive search for a company that would meet the needs of the bank’s clients while understanding the personal attention and service that comes with community banking. Jones said he was struck by the common characteristics shared by United and Sterne Agee.

“We took our time to find the right partner that we knew would fit within the community bank culture,” Jones said. “Both United and Sterne Agee are more than 109 years old. We’ve both endured economic challenges and have remained strong. We are both large enough to completely meet the needs of our clients but small enough to devote our complete attention to them as well. I know this partnership is a win-win for our customers and the bank.”

Based in Birmingham, Ala., the Sterne Agee family of companies traces its history to 1901. The Trust Company was established in 1994 as part of the larger organization to meet the individual, family and institutional demands for a higher level of personal service in a fiduciary environment. The company offers investment management consulting, wealth planning, living trusts, charitable trusts, estate administration and testamentary trust services, among others.

Kay Donnellan, Senior VP & Director of Personal Trust for Sterne Agee, said The Trust Company is highly regarded for its safe and sound business and investment practices. She said Sterne Agee is honored that United Bank would select the company for such an important part of the bank’s financial services.

“One of our core values at Sterne Agee says ‘We Prevail Together,’ meaning we are all dependent on one another,” Donnellan said. “Working with United Bank, we have assembled a great team and have put in place the resources that will help us ensure our clients’ success as we go forward.”

Those interested in Sterne Agee’s trust and estate planning services will meet initially with Renee Hardy, VP & Financial Services Manager at United Bank, to determine the potential services needed. Hardy will coordinate with Donnellan to establish an appointment and any follow up meetings. Hardy said for those not familiar with the services provided by Sterne Agee, there are common questions that may lead to trust and estate discussions. Those include:

  • Who is going to make all the decisions after I am gone?

  • How do I ensure my children and grandchildren receive a proper education?

  • Am I paying more taxes than necessary?

  • Am I prepared for financial emergencies?

  • Does my family know where all of my records are?

  • Will my hard-earned money last for my family?

“Many times customers do not feel comfortable talking about sensitive subjects like money and death,” Hardy said. “But we find more often customers who say they wish they had those conversations when they had the chance. By combining the service United Bank customers are already familiar with, and the strength of Sterne Agee, our clients can be comfortable and confident that their interests take preference.”
