MONTGOMERY, Ala.— Spanish Fort quarterback Tyler Johnston was named Mr. Football 2015 during the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s annual Player of the Year Banquet in Montgomery Jan. 13. The ASWA’s banquet was presented by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association.

Johnston (6-2, 210-pounds) edged Clay-Chalkville quarterback Ty Pigrome 148-139 in the ASWA voting for the Mr. Football honor. The two players faced off for the state title in Tuscaloosa with Spanish Fort team winning, 31-28.Spanish Fort finished 2015 with a 15-0 record and was the only unbeaten team in any classification in the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

Johnston, a UAB commit, is the first quarterback to win the honor since Carver-Montgomery’s Jeremy Johnson in 2012 and the first Coastal Alabama player to win since T.J. Yeldon of Daphne received the award in 2011.

Johnston finished his high school career with 426 completions in 626 pass attempts for 8,338 yards and 83 passing touchdowns. He also ran for 2,706 yards and scored 44 rushing touchdowns on 359 carries. His career-yardage total is 11,044.

The Toros’ quarterback led SF to a Class 6A AHSAA state crown in 2015 and to a 5A championship as a sophomore in 2013. He was named MVP of both title games. Johnston missed the second half of his junior season with a knee injury. He finished his high school career 35-0 as a starter in AHSAA play.
