Twin Beech detours to affect school opening traffic

FAIRHOPE – Detours on Twin Beech Road near Fairhope High School and Fairhope Middle School will continue after the start of the academic year due to construction delays.

The project has been delayed by rain and utility conflicts, according to a Fairhope city statement. The first phase of construction that required closing Twin Beech from Bishop Road to U.S. 98 will now continue through August.

School traffic to Fairhope High will be routed to the main school entrance on U.S. 98 until Twin Beech Road is reopened from Bishop Road to Pirate Drive.

Fairhope police will be patrolling the area on U.S. 98 near the school to help safely route traffic during the morning and afternoon school rush, the city statement said.

Fairhope Public Works Director Richard Johnson said on July 26 that work is continuing, but the weather put the project behind schedule.

“Twin Beech is moving along,” Johnson said. “The rain hasn’t been our friend. It looks like we’re going to have a relatively dry week. We have been corresponding with the schools that their traffic pattern may be negatively affected. We’re probably not going to have that road fully opened or even possibly opened but we’re giving the worst-case scenario.”

Until work is completed, only local traffic will be allowed on Twin Beech Road.

Other traffic is detoured to Nicholes Avenue extension and Boothe Road to avoid the construction zone, the city statement said.

Crews are adding an additional turn lane on Twin Beech Road at U.S. 98 and a traffic signal.
