Turnovers kill Foley Lions in homecoming loss to Northview

FOLEY, Alabama - The Foley Lions lost five turnovers and could not convert the potential game-tying two-point conversion in the fourth quarter of a 41-39 loss to 6A Region 2 foe Northview-Dothan on Friday.

The Lions (5-3, 4-2) must now defeat Dothan on Friday to keep its hopes playoff hopes alive. Dothan (6-2, 4-2) defeated Baldwin County 52-17 on Friday.

Northview (5-3, 3-3) scored 21 points off of Foley’s turnovers and quarterback Jalen Harris had three touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown in the win for the Cougars, who visit Fairhope on Friday.

The Cougars jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter on touchdown passes from Harris. Foley scored its first touchdown when Tyrin Pugh returned Northview’s second kickoff for a touchdown to make it 13-7 at the end of the first.

The Lions tied the game with a Cedrix Reed 5-yard touchdown run after an 80-yard drive in the second quarter. Reed carried nine times on the drive including a 3-yard carry to convert a fourth down and extend the scoring march.

Northview answered Foley’s score with a 79-yard drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run from Devin Coston. Foley started its next drive at the 44 after a short kickoff, then quarterback Maison Taylor connected with Demarcus Bingham twice on a three play drive including a 25-yard touchdown strike to tie the game at 20 with 57 seconds left in the half.

Foley took a 26-20 lead Reed 4-yard touchdown run on the first drive of the second half. The Lions missed the extra point after a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty after the touchdown.

The Cougars drove 74 yards in 18 plays for their next score. Foley forced a punt after 11 plays, but the Lions muffed the catch and the Cougars recovered to keep the drive alive at the Foley 37. Harris hit Adrian Brooks for a 10-yard touchdown strike with 4:07 left in the third and the Cougars led 27-26.

Foley fumbled on its next drive and Northview returned it 60 yards for another touchdown to extended its lead to 34-26.

Taylor was intercepted at midfield with 9:58 to play in the fourth and the Cougars drove for a Harris touchdown run with 6:30 left to play.

The Lions added a rushing touchdown from Reed and a touchdown pass from Taylor to Javian Davis with 2:30 left, but could not convert on the potential game-tying two-point conversion.
