BAY MINETTE, Alabama —Hundreds of runners, walkers and bike riders from Baldwin and neighboring counties will participate in the second Annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K Run-Walk-Ride in Mobile.
The event will begin with a sunrise service at USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park which will feature a tribute to United States Coast Guard members who lost their lives earlier this year in Mobile Bay.
The 5K run, walk and bike ride will immediately follow. Participants will go through the Bankhead Tunnel and finish at Bienville Square near the RSA BankTrust Building in downtown Mobile.
Mobile is one of dozens of cities across the country to host the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run. Since 2002, the event is held annually to honor the 343 firefighters and first responders who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
The event also remembers the men and women in the armed forces who died while fighting the War on Terror. The Tunnel to Towers Run recreates the final footsteps of New York City Firefighter Stephen Siller, who was last seen running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel with 60 pounds of gear strapped on his back on his way to the World Trade Center.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Stephen Siller Foundation, which supports special needs by first responders, burn centers, orphan support and severely wounded veterans.
Registration is still open at t2trun.com.
Pre-registered fees are $25 for 5K, $20 for Fun Run, and $30 and $20, respectively, on race day.
