FOLEY, Ala. — Baldwin County’s most high profile season opener between the Spanish Fort Toros and Daphne Trojans will be broadcast live as the first UTV-44 “Game of the Week” of the season.

The defending Class 5A champion Toros will visit 6A power Daphne in a game televised live Aug. 30 as part of UTV’s weekly schedule. The Trojans and Toros opened last season with a nationally televised slugfest that ended as a 20-14 win for Spanish Fort.

The Toros have won two of the last three 5A championships and the Trojans won the 6A title in 2010.

“We try to get our kids the toughest schedule we can every year,” Spanish Fort head coach Mark Freeman said at Media Day last week. “We want to play the best teams. We were ready for the championship game last year because we had played big games before.”

Daphne finished with an 8-4 record and fell to Opelika in the second round of the 6A playoffs last season. Daphne head coach Glenn Vickery said he hopes his team can get the year started with a win over the Toros.

“I think when you open up with a big game like this it should be a motivator,” he said. “I’m hoping that our guys remember that feeling of walking to the bus in the heat after losing to them last year.”

The Toros will be featured three times on the “Game of the Week” broadcast, while the Trojans will be featured twice. The Foley Lions and Fairhope Pirates will also make appearances.

FLEX SCHEDULING: The Game of the Week will once again follow a Flex schedule for 2013; games for week one through week four are chosen and will be covered according to the posted schedule. The flex schedule will be implemented for week five through week 10 and are subject to change.

Flexible scheduling ensures quality matchups on Friday night in those weeks.

This will allow winning teams to play their way onto the UTV44 Game of the Week schedule and prime time television.

UTV-44 GAME OF THE WEEK SCHEDULE: • 8/30 Spanish Fort at Daphne • 9/6 Davidson at Baker • 9/13 Daphne at Foley • 9/20 Davidson at McGill-Toolen • 9/27 Vigor at Blount • 10/4 Spanish Fort at St. Paul’s • 10/11 Vigor at Spanish Fort • 10/18 Daphne at Fairhope • 10/25 McGill-Toolen at Murphy • 11/1 St. Paul’s at UMS-Wright * All games begin at 7 p.m. on UTV-44 * Beginning 9/27 games are subject to “flex scheduling”
