Trojans take 59-49 win on Toro hardwood

SPANISH FORT, Ala.— Spanish Fort rallied from a 10-point deficit to within two points of visiting Daphne once in the third quarter and twice in the fourth but the Trojans countered with an 8-4 run in the final 90 seconds to finish with a 59-49 win at Spanish Fort Monday.  

Devonte Young scored 20 points to lead the Trojans while Quinn Atkinson scored the same for Spanish Fort. Cullen Pierce added 10 for the Toros and Bradley Nero nine for DHS.

Young scored 11 points in the first quarter to help Daphne build a 22-12 lead after the opening eight minutes. Atkinson scored all 12 first-period points for SF. At the free-throw line DHS was 17-of-30 while SF was 18-for-29.

It was the second meeting of the year for the two neighboring rivals. DHS won the contest at home 47-38 Nov. 22.

Both teams face area opponents Tuesday. The Class 6A Trojans (8-7, 2-0) will travel to Fairhope while 5A SFHS ( 12-5, 0-1) will play at Williamson.

Daphne and Spanish Fort will take part in the Bay Area Classic which begins at Fairhope High Thursday.
