DAPHNE — Quarterback Coley White accounted for four first-half touchdowns while accumulating nearly 300 yards in the first two quarters Friday night in leading Daphne to a 49-13 romp over Stanhope Elmore of Millbrook in the first round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association state football playoffs in Jubilee Stadium.

White ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns and threw touchdown passes of 63 yards to elusive Reggie Hunt and 8 to wide receiver Matt Kuglar to help the Trojans, who scored on every first-half possession, take a 35-13 halftime lead. The DHS defense took over in the second half, limiting a potentially explosive Stallions offense to just 52 yards in the final two periods.

The wins sends the Trojans, who improved to 10-1, on to the second round of the state playoffs, where they will play at Opelika Friday night. Opelika defeated Blount of Prichard 29-0 in Opelika. The loss ended Stanhope Elmore’s season at 7-4.

Daphne forced a punt after giving up a first-play first down to start the game, then drove 80 yards in just six plays to take a lead it would not relinquish. White carried three times for 81 yards. He scored from 23 yards out on a quarterback counter after faking to Hunt, who was dropped for a 3-yard loss three plays earlier.

Justin Koblas kicked the first of seven straight extra points without a miss for a 7-0 lead with 6:46 left in the first quarter.

The Trojans needed just one play to score after forcing another punt. White looked left, then came back across the field to Hunt, who finished off the 63-yard touchdown by scampering down the east sideline. Hunt scored with 4:47 left in the first quarter.

Stanhope Elmore showed its explosive potential on the ensuing possession when halfback Trey Lewis took a handoff around right end and scored from 74 yards out on the second play after the kickoff. Vince Nix kicked the PAT with 3:46 left in the first quarter.

Before the quarter was over, White had the Trojans in the end zone again. He scored again on a 3-yard run around left end on the fifth play of a 76-yard drive, reaching paydirt with 39.9 seconds showing. The big gainer in the drive was White’s 76-yard hookup with Kuglar to the Stallions’ 5.

The Stallions responded with a 68-yard drive to their other touchdown. Lewis turned a left-side screen pass from quarterback Steele Schwonke into a 33-yard touchdown with 6:05 left in the first half. A bad snap on the point-after caused Nix’s kick to flutter low and to the right.

Hunt pushed the lead to 28-13 at the end of Daphne’s next drive that covered 66 yards. White dropped a first-and-goal toss but recovered his fumble and sprinted around right end, scoring with 1:08 left in the first half.

Coach Glen Vickery called for a low kickoff and it hit one of the Stallions’ front-line men and the Trojans recovered at Stanhope Elmore’s 40. Seven plays later, White hit Kuglar in the front of the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown with five seconds left in the first half.

The Stallions opened the second half with a successful onside kick and drove from Daphne’s 41 to the 11 before giving the ball up on downs, and after forcing Daphne’s first punt, was stopped on a fourth-down fake-punt play at Stanhope Elmore’s 45.

Five plays later, Hunt scored again on a 6-yard run around right end. He had a 22-yard gain two plays earlier. The touchdown came with 3:08 left in the third quarter.

Backup quarterback Robert Cooper, after Kynjee Cotton sacked Schwonke and forced a fumble, took the Trojans to their final touchdown. Cooper, after a holding penalty pushed Daphne back to the Stallions’ 19, ran twice for 16 yards, then connected with LeAndrew Walton for the TD with 8:06 remaining.

For the night, White finished with 148 yards rushing on 18 carries and 161 yards passing, all in the first half. He threw one incompletion in the second half. Hunt added 92 yards rushing on 10 carries to help the Trojans finish with 301 yards on the ground.

Lewis, after gaining 120 yards rushing on nine carries in the first half, finished with 150 on 20 totes. Schwonke completed nine of 20 passes for 91 yards.
