Train like a cop: Foley PD's pathway to law enforcement

Posted

The Foley Police Department will launch "Cardio with a Cop," a new initiative aimed at helping aspiring police officers prepare for the rigorous physical training (PT) test required for employment, Wednesday, July 10.

The program is designed to give prospective candidates an edge in their pursuit of a law enforcement career by offering them the opportunity to train alongside seasoned officers, according to a news release. Participants will engage in a comprehensive fitness regimen that covers both strength training and cardiovascular conditioning, tailored specifically to meet the demands of the PT test mandated by all Alabama law enforcement agencies.

The test itself comprises several key components, including completing 22 push-ups and 25 sit-ups within 60 seconds each, navigating an obstacle course in under 90 seconds, and running 1.5 miles in less than 15 minutes and 28 seconds. "Cardio with a Cop" aims to equip participants with the skills and endurance necessary to excel in each aspect of the test, ensuring they are well-prepared for prospect day, a pivotal event in the hiring process.

Participants will convene two to three times per week over a six-week period, receiving guidance from officers selected based on their diverse fitness backgrounds. Among the instructors are a marathon-trained officer, a jujitsu purple belt holder, and two certified fitness instructors, offering a wealth of expertise to support participants' training efforts.

"We believe this program will not only help prepare you, but also give you an opportunity to meet some of our staff before joining our team," the release read. "This program is open to all those interested in joining law enforcement. Even if you are considering working for other agencies, we encourage all to sign up for our program to better prepare before applying."
