ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Robertsdale police stopped two vehicles on Chicago Street near Nebraska Street Thursday, May 14. According to Sgt. Rex Bishop, a spokesman for the Robertsdale Police Department, “One vehicle was following too close and the lead vehicle did not have a seat belt on.” The officer stopped both vehicles.

That was the beginning of a chase that ended when a suspect, Donnie L. Ashlock crashed his vehicle on Interstate 10 near the Dauphin Island Parkway.

Ashlock, 30, was later discovered to have a warrant for arson out on him from the Florida Escambia County Sheriff's Office.

According to a press release from the Robertsdale Police Department, the driver of the first vehicle, Ashlock, sped away from the traffic stop after giving the officer false ID.

The suspect traveled up state Highway 59 on to I-10 westbound. The Robertsdale officer, according to Bishop, remained at a safe distance from the suspect.

After Ashlock’s vehicle crashed, he was taken into custody, transported to the jail in Robertsdale, and was later transferred to the Baldwin County Corrections Center.

In addition to the Florida warrant, Ashlock was charged with the use of false ID to obstruct justice, reckless endangerment, and being a fugitive from justice.

The driver of the second stopped vehicle, identified as Kimberly Robin Gravitt, was arrested for resisting arrest and for giving the officer false information about Ashlock’s identity.
