Town to order clean up of property

SILVERHILL — The town of Silverhill will take steps to see that owners of local property clean up their act.

Mayor Tim Wilson said the town had received complaints from a trailer park off of Woodpecker Lane, including grass and weeds grown up around the property and debris scattered everywhere.

Wilson said while the property is outside the town’s limits it is within the town’s police jurisdiction. The town can issue a letter to property owners under the town’s junk, nuisance ordinance.

Because the ordinance is “specific to health and safety,” the ordinance can be enforced within the town’s police jurisdiction, but outside the town’s limits.

Wilson also indicated that the town could also use the ordinance to handle neighbor complaints if burning debris is causing a nuisance or health risk.

In other business, town clerk Bonnie McNeil presented a report from the town’s Heritage Day in October.

The town had a total income of $7,151.60 from the festival, including $498 from the Heritage Day 5K, $2,653.60 from booth rental, and $4,000 from sponsors.

With expenses totalling $2,619.86, the town had a profit of $4,531.74. Profits from the festival are split between the Oscar Johnson Library, Silverhill Kids Park and the Parks and Recreation department for a profit of $1,510.58 for each organization.

This year will mark the 25th Heritage Day Festival since beginning in 1982. The festival was cancelled in 2004 because of damage caused by Hurricane Ivan. The festival was moved to the third Saturday in October in 2006 and this year’s festival will be held Oct. 18.

In other business the council:

— Set a meeting with accountant Carl Johnson for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 to discuss the town’s audit.

— Discussed the possibility of setting up a Web page for a town newsletter.

— Discussed changing insurance for the town’s Volunteer Fire Department. The council asked the town’s attorney to look into the legality of changing insurance.
