LOXLEY, Alabama — The Town of Loxley had its traditional splash day June 30 to wrap up a month filled with activities in its annual Summer Youth Program.

About 35 boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 12 participated in the program, which began May 31 and ended July 1 at the Loxley Civic Center and Municipal Park.

“Everyone had a great time,” Tina Harris, activities director for the town, said.

The camp was started in limited capacity in 2004 by then activities director Joey Knight and has had as many as 100 before limiting the number a few years ago, said Harris, who came on board as activities director for the town in 2013.

The camp is coordinated by Debbie Huffer, who provides additional staff personnel and provides nutritional lunches.

“We have such a wonderful staff,” Huffer said, including a certified nurse, a certified teacher and two certified paraprofessionals.

The camp featured daily arts and craft activities, special events, including weekly splash days, among other things. This year’s camp also featured several outings, including movie days, and field trips to 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center, USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park and the Railroad Museum in Foley.

Margaret Odom, extension agent with Auburn University’s Cooperative Extension System came and did a variety of presentations, including tips for protection from damaging sun rays; bullying and eco-friendly activities.

“I had several campers tell us that it was the best camp they attended this year,” Huffer said. “We’re all looking forward to doing it again next year.”

Activities at the Civic Center will be limited during July, but will open back up in August with a full range of activities.

Beryl Allen coordinates a full range of activities for seniors. Other activities, such as ballroom dancing, art and exercise classes, along with club meetings are scheduled throughout the month.
