PRICHARD, Alabama — Joel Poe connected with Blain Crain from 11-yards out for a big third-quarter touchdown pass to tie Vigor 30-30 and Alexander Theodore hit the extra-point kick for the final lead change of the game Thursday night as No. 7 Spanish Fort went on to defeat 5A Region 1 rival Vigor 38-30 at Prichard Stadium.

"Team responded great to the short week (of practice)," said SFHS head coach Mark Freeman.  The Toros suffered three serious injuries (out indefinitely) in the loss to St. Paul's which also had some controversial official decisions go against Spanish Fort.

"The coaches and players did an excellent job while working through injuries and coming off a let down," he said.

Tied 24-24 at the half Vigor took the six-point lead 30-24 on Roverters Barron's three-yard run. But for the fifth time in the game, the Wolves failed to convert a point-after-touch-down play.

The Toros took advantage of that deficit as Theodore scored all six PATs and a 27-yard field-goal for Spanish Fort. Both offenses moved the ball early and often with barely a punt between them, but turnovers took their toll on Vigor as the visitors capitalized on two second-half fumbles including near the end of the third period at the VHS 30-yard line which SFHS turned into six-points. Freshman quarterback Tyler Johnson capped the resulting scoring drive with an 18-yard keeper for the Toros for the final 38-30 mark.

Spanish Fort upped it's region record to 4-1 and overall to 6-1 after dropping it's first loss to (5-1, 4-0) region-leading St. Paul's last week in region play.

Vigor fell to 5-2, 4-1 Thursday and still must face the Saints who will play host to Vigor next week. The Toros will host Region 1 opponent LeFlore Magnet School at 7 p.m. Friday at Spanish Fort High School. The Rattlers have region wins over Faith and Williamson, but lost to Vigor 27-8 earlier this season.

Poe also threw a touchdown pass to Crain for three yards and completed a six-yard TD toss to Sam Harris. The SF senior QB was good on 22-of-28 pass attempts amounting to 309 yards in the air. With Ed Autry, Victor Dunning still out with injuries on offense, Sammy Tolbert picked up a rushing TD from the Vigor two-yard line to feather the cap of a 192-yard ground game for SFHS.

Vigor scored on a 70-yard pass play from Devin Adams to Shaq Ward, runs by DeSherrius Flowers of 80 and 15 yards and one by Adams from the 13-yard line. and The Wolves' missed PAT tries of three two-point tries and two extra-point kicks was a swing of eight points—enough to have won the game.

But Spanish Fort held the final lead through a scoreless and defensive fourth quarter, recovered another VHS fumble, used the clock advantageously and stiffened on defense to keep the Wolves on the VHS side of midfield on all but one possession the rest of the game.

The Toros have scored a total of 264 points to opponents 147 through six games to average 44 ppg while allowing 24.5 ppg.
