SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Quinn Atkinson stole a pass off the inbound play with 2.5 seconds remaining in the game to lock in a 47-45 Toros lead and secure the home-court win over visiting Baldwin County High Saturday.
Atkinson led the Toros (8-4) with 14 points, Ladarrell Pettway added eight, Kevin Marion seven and Chris Rose six for SF which trailed Baldwin County 19-18 at the half. The Tigers’ (3-6) Khalia Ezell had a game high 15 points and teammate Jaquan Finch scored 12.
Spanish Fort — which recently added players from the Toros football team — built a 48-38 lead by the end of the third quarter. But a pair of three-pointers from Montez Brown and Ezell helped Baldwin County respond and tie the score 41-41 about three minutes into the fourth.
The momentum swung back for the Fort when Marion then drove to the iron through Tiger traffic for back-to-back baskets and a 45-41 SF lead before Finch answered with a strong vertical move for BC and it was a two-point game again with 56 seconds to go.
But a backcourt foul sent Rose to the line where he hit both ends for another SF cushion at 47-43. The Toros went into a delay spread but a steal and score by Ezell made it a one-bucket game with 47.3 seconds to go. A carry call on the transition turned the ball back over to BC for a chance to tie or win. But Atkinson picked the inbound underneath as time ran out.
“I think we played pretty well tonight, especially considered how good Baldwin County is,” said SFHS head coach Dru Powell. “We looked a little out of it in the first half. We just got our football guys back and working them back in always takes a little adjustment for everybody. But we started to mesh a lot better in the second half and then we did a good job of controlling the ball better too. Complete team effort and always like to see that. Quite proud of these guys. They (BCHS) always push hard and never let up and coach (Lorenzo) Hunter is a great coach so anytime we beat them we feel good, but we obviously have a lot of work to do.”
The Toros were 8-of-10 at the free-throw line. The Tigers were 3-of-6.
Spanish Fort will host a tournament Thursday and Friday. The Toros open with Citronelle the first night at 6 p.m. The consolation game is set for Friday at 4:30 p.m. with the title game to follow. The Tigers will host Fairhope Tuesday night in Bay Minette at 7:30 p.m.
