SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Spanish Fort pitcher Rocky McCord was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 39th round of the Major League Baseball draft last week.

McCord committed to Auburn University last fall after helping the Toros to their first 5A state title as a junior. The right hander got his second state ring last month going 10-1 in 2011 and winning the deciding game in the state championship series against Cullman.

Spanish Fort head coach Tommy Walker said the MLB recognition is a reflection on McCord's dedication and effort.

“The entire Spanish Fort baseball program is excited for Rocky,” Walker said. “He is the first player in the history of the school that has been drafted. He has worked extremely hard at the little things to make himself into a better baseball player and is very deserving of being drafted. He takes care of his arm year round and is always working to get better. He has been a huge part of our back to back 5A State Championships at Spanish Fort and we are excited for his future.”

McCord was also named to the 2011 All-State team as the Toros repeated as 5A state champions. He hit .408 with 24 doubles, eight homers and 50 RBIs while recording a 10-1 record with an ERA of 1.84.

Unsure of McCord's plans, Walker is sure the future Tiger or Twin will do well.

“I am confident that Rocky will make the decision that is right for himself and his family. He is in a win-win situation. He will either be an outstanding player for Auburn University or a great prospect for the Twins.”

Former Trojans drafted by Mets, Dodgers

Former Daphne players Greg Pron and Hunter Jennings were also picked in the MLB draft.

Pron was selected by the New York Mets in the 42nd round after having helped lead the University of West Florida to the Division II national championship as a senior this year.

Jennings is still an underclassman at Delgado Community College in New Orleans and was picked by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 32nd round.
