Top 10 Foley High seniors are honored

FOLEY — Foley High School’s top 10 graduating seniors were honored at a banquet presented by South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce Tuesday evening at Foley First Baptist Church.

According to Foley High Principal Russ Moore, students had to earn that honor by reaching a list of criteria that included earning a grade-point average of at least 3.7, involvement and excelling in core advance-placement subjects. For their efforts, the honorees were presented with a copy of “The Butterfly Effect: How Your Life Matters” by Andy Andrews. In addition, a book will be donated to the FHS Library in each student’s name. Those names include: Maddie Brumfield, Brittany Lassiter, Marley McKinsey Morris, Alexander Muth, Calvin Muth, Kevin Pham, Jack Sims, Rachel Picken, Leigh Ashton Watson and Shelly Young.

Russ added that these 10 are among about 365 Foley High seniors this year.

“I say ‘about’ because we’ve always got students moving into and out of the area,” he said Tuesday.

But these weren’t the only honorees Tuesday night. Foley High Teacher of the Year Scott Keenan was also celebrated. That recognition consisted of recognizing the teacher’s work with his statistics students, in particular.

“Last year, 100 percent of his statistics students scored high enough to receive college credit,” Moore said of Keenan, who also teaches Algebra III.

In his speech, Keenan spoke to the seniors.

“To the top 10, you are here because of who you are,” he said. “You are a leader and have character. You do the right thing when no one is looking and you’re not going to get credit for it.”

Each of those seniors also spoke, explaining chosen courses of college or career.

“I would love to be in microbiology and study cancer and get to work with patients,” said Lassiter, who plans to attend Auburn University.

The honorees also discussed things they learned over the years.

“If you work at something, it’s amazing what you can accomplish,” said Alexander Muth, who plans to study math at the University of Alabama.

Moore commended what these seniors have accomplished so far, with such grade averages as 99 and 100.

“These are outstanding young people and will do great things,” he said.
