DAPHNE, Ala.—Daphne High School’s Trojan Hall is the place to be Saturday night when 21 contestants vie for beauty awards at the school’s Beauty Walk 2009.
The event—to begin at 7 p.m.; doors open at 6 p.m., and tickets are $10—showcases contestants’ personalities and talents. The girls will compete for Freshman Beauty, Sophomore Beauty, Junior Beauty, Senior Beauty and Queen Daphne awards.
Just one senior will be crowned Queen Daphne, the night’s highest honor.
The evening’s theme is ‘Hollywood’ with each girl selecting a character from a movie they’ve enjoyed.
“One girl is the Grinch,” Girls Service Club vice president Ashley Belson said, referring to the title villain from Dr. Suess’ “How The Grinch Stole Christmas.”
“One is ‘Ecto 2’, the car from ‘Ghostbusters,’” event coordinator Ginny Paisant said. “Another girl is Tinkerbell from ‘Peter Pan.’ And we also have a girl who will be the volleyball from ‘Castaway,’ Wilson.”
The Girls Service Club, event sponsor, comprises female Daphne High students involved in school and community events.
Pageant participants must have at least a 2.5 GPA and have no discipline referrals from teachers and administrators.
“They support ‘Music Under the Stars,’ the Jubilee Festival, the Mamma Mia Festival,” Paisant said. At this year’s Mamma Mia Festival—the flagship benefit for Supporting Educational Enrichment in Daphne’s Schools—club members helped with serving, catering and clean-up.
“They sponsor character-education programs at the school.
“They also help with Field Days at elementary and middle schools,” Paisant said. “And they do Coastal Cleanup,” the local environmental awareness program that promotes the Gulf Coast’s cleanliness.
Club members recently participated in Project Linus, making fleece blankets and donating them to sick children at the University of South Alabama Children’s Hospital.
