BAY MINETTE — A former Books A Million cashier has been indicted on theft charges after allegedly stealing $3,470 by making false returns at the Daphne store.

Ruqayyah Shaheerah Rashid, 22, of Cedar Ridge Road in Mobile, was indicted Sept. 24 on first-degree theft of property and was released on bail set at $7,500.

According to court records, Rashid made false returns at her cash register and kept the cash. According to a deposition filed in Baldwin County District Court, she sold items to customers, then charged the register for a cash exchange on a returned item.

Rashid was arrested June 1.

Other indictments handed down during the last grand jury term include:

Melvin Eugene Lovett, 43, of Pollard Road in Daphne, charged with possession of a controlled substance, second-degree possession of marijuana and misdemeanor DUI.

According to a deposition filed by Daphne Police officer Houston Sanders, authorities made contact with Lovett May 22 after receiving a reckless driver call.

Lovett allegedly failed field sobriety tests and recorded a .248 percent alcohol level. After being arrested for DUI, Sanders said cocaine was discovered in Lovett’s shirt pocket and marijuana was discovered in his vehicle.

Lovett pleaded not guilty in Baldwin County Circuit Court Oct. 30, according to court records. The grand jury set bail at $6,000 and Lovett was released.

Ryan Dade Andrews, 23, of Greeno Road in Fairhope, was indicted on second-degree assault after allegedly using a razor knife May 16 to severely cut the left thumb of Brian Jeffrey Potter, of Liberty Road in Fairhope.

According to a deposition filed May 16 by Fairhope Police detective Stephanie Hollinghead, Andrews cut Potter’s thumb during an altercation. The laceration required surgery to reattach the thumb, according to court records.

Bail was set at $5,000 and Andrews was released from custody, according to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Web site.
