DAPHNE, Ala. — The Shoulder, a private, Christian-based, substance-abuse rehabilitation program for Baldwin County adult males, will host their “Holiday Open House” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at The Yellow Cottage in Fairhope.
The open house will include door prizes, music and refreshments for attendees. Admission is free and all Baldwin County residents are invited to come.
There will also be a “cookie cook-off” starting at 11 a.m. with prizes for the winners of the competition.
“Bring a dozen of your best recipes, and there will be judges. We will give prizes for the first second, third and honorable mention,” said Debbie Hanson, assistant director of The Shoulder.
There will also be a table for kids to play while their parents shop, and Santa Claus will be in attendance for part of the time, Hanson said.
All proceeds will benefit The Shoulder, Hanson said. The Shoulder is currently in the process of seeking approval to build their new home.
Hurricane Katrina destroyed their original home of 17 years in 2005, which was located on the Causeway. Since then, they have been housed at the old Albert P. Brewer factory on Pine Hill Road, which is now owned by Alta Pointe Health Systems.
Attendees are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy. If they do, they will receive a 10 percent discount on all Yellow Cottage items excluding jewelry.
The Yellow Cottage is a thrift shop owned by The Shoulder that sells clothing, furniture, jewelry and other accessories. They opened in last December, and Hanson hopes this is the first of many open houses.
“We would like to do this every year,” Hanson said. “It’s as much for fun as it is a fundraiser. There will be a yard sale, too.”
The Yellow Cottage is located at 20741 State Hwy 181 in Fairhope. For more information about The Shoulder, visit www.theshoulder.org.
